A Healthy Breakfast for Kids That Is Easy

Easy breakfast ieas for kids that are healthy

Did you know that children who skip breakfast are more likely to become obese, get diabetes, or heart disease when they are adults? It’s shocking all the statistics you can find that support eating a healthy breakfast for kids.

In fact, “Study after study shows that kids who eat breakfast function better. They do better in school, and have better concentration and more energy,” says Marcie Beth Schneider, M.D., FAAP, a member of the AAP’s Committee on Nutrition and an adolescent medicine physician in Greenwich, Conn.

Wow.

I’m sold. Keep reading for my new favorite healthy breakfast for kids that is easy.

Breakfast and School Performance

Mom always said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. At the time it may have been her way of trying to get tired, stubborn children to eat their breakfast quicker but maybe there was something to what she was saying. A UK study says that a healthy breakfast for kids before school makes them twice as likely to score highly in tests and assessments.

Wouldn’t you do anything to give your child an advantage at school?

Well, this same study says in opposition to a healthy breakfast for kids a sugary breakfast does not have any positive effect on academic achievement. One in five children are eating a high sugar breakfast if they eat breakfast at all.

Even more shocking, a Yale study found that it’s better for kids to have two breakfasts versus having none. So, if your child eats something at home and then gets extra food at a school breakfast program they are less likely to become obese when compared to the children that have no breakfast at all.

High Sugar Breakfasts

As a parent, I have been guilty of trying to do the quickest versus the healthy breakfast for kids. When we are in a hurry at my house I literally make my kids have a bowl of cereal. I don’t have to think just poor and give.

Certainly, we know that “kids” cereals are full of sugar so I avoid purchasing those in the first place, but there are other breakfasts we might be serving that can be doing more harm than good.

For example, breakfast bars are stuffed full of sugar and often have very little in protein. I used to eat those “fiber” bars myself without realizing how absolutely horrible they were.

When I was a child I would eat a healthy breakfast for kids of packaged oatmeal. Many I loved those things—guess why. They are jammed full of sugar.

In fact, the instant oats in them are processed and don’t have nearly as much fiber as they could. You would be better off making your own oatmeal with rolled or steel-cut oats and adding fruit or your own controlled amount of sugar.

Another quick meal you may try providing your children with is juice or store-bought smoothies. Unfortunately, the juice is all carbs and sugar while those smoothies may have sugar and high fructose corn syrup.

Ugh. You can’t win.

In the end, you are way better off making your own smoothies.

Healthy Breakfast for Kids

How in the world do you make a kid friendly breakfasts that is easy? Obviously, if we want it to be healthy we need to make it ourselves, so we can control the items that go into it. But that takes time we simply don’t seem to have.

I found a few items during a Costco trip that made it amazingly easy to make a healthy breakfast for kids. You can use these items as stand-alone or in combinations.

The first item I found at my local Costco is Organic Acai Berry puree packs by Sambazon. They come in 12 individually measured superfruit packs full of antioxidants and Omegas. These packs are perfect for smoothies or acai bowls.

The wonderful thing about Sambazon is they are the 1st Certified Organic and Fair-Trade Acai Company. Sambazon has a policy of Amazon Rainforest preservation, giving back to the community, and paying fair wages. So, you can feel pretty good about purchasing their product.

The second item I grabbed at Costco for this healthy breakfast for kids is Nature’s Path Organic Pumpkin Seed + Flax Granola. This granola is a wonderful source of Omega 3 and has 5grams of fiber per serving. It also has 10grams protein per serving which will help your child stay fueled throughout her morning.

The leading ingredient is whole grain rolled oats. And there is NO high fructose corn syrup. It uses cane sugar as the primary sweetener. You can choose to omit the granola if you are trying to limit the sugar in your child’s diet.

How to Make a Healthy Breakfast for Kids That is Easy

What You Need

  • 1 packet of Sambason Acai Superfruit
  • 1/2 an organic banana
  • 1/4 cup Nature’s Path Organic Granola
  • (in Pumpkin Seed + Flax)
  • 1 pack Nature’s Garden Organic Trail Mix

“Cooking” Breakfast for Your Kids

Making this breakfast is so crazy easy I really have no excuse NOT to make it. Take out one packet of Sambason Acai Superfruit and thaw it under running water for a minute or two. And honestly, I’ve thrown it in completely frozen without any problems.

Add half a banana and blend in a blender. I use a Ninja and never have a problem with it coming out nice and smooth.

Once you are happy with your blend poor it into a bowl and sprinkle the Nature’s Path granola around the edge of the bowl. Add the Nature’s Garden trail mix to the center of the bowl as desired.

Voila!

You’re done.

Conclusion

I was amazed at how many organic products I found at Costco. And this healthy breakfast for kids is so easy to make from these individual-sized packages. I have two school-aged children so it is even easier to double the recipe with a whole banana, and I find that my children don’t want an entire package of nuts in their bowl so I can use one for both of them.

And the great thing about all of these items is that you can repurpose them for other items. My daughter like to have the Sambazon Acai Berry Blend as a smoothy and I can add spinach or kale for some added healthy goodness. I enjoy a small bowl of Nature’s Path granola with soy milk for breakfast, and I use the Nature’s Garden Trail Mix as snacks in the kids’ lunches.
