A Surprisingly Honest Misfits Market Review: This Totally Happened

Surprisingly Honest Misfits Market Review on The ArtsyFartzy Experience

Chances are you’re looking for a Misfits Market review to judge if the service is good to use or not. I get it. I do the same thing.

When you look on the internet for reviews, for a Misfits Market review or some other product, you will find bloggers that review a product in exchange for sponsorship or a free product. These reviewers give their honest review, but how honest is it?

Some may give an uninfluenced review, but many, I believe, spin a positive view on everything. After all, these bloggers want to have a good relationship with that sponsor, and I don’t blame them one bit.

First, let me tell you this is not a sponsored post, so if you want an honest Misfits Market review keep reading. I’ll tell you the pros and cons and my experience with Misfits Market customer service.

Why I Ordered Misfit Vegetables

If you don’t know what misfit vegetables are, they are the too small, too big, and too ugly vegetables you don’t see at the grocery store. Grocery stores don’t want ugly produce since they think you won’t buy it.

These imperfect foods often get turned into animal feed or tilled back into the ground. This common practice called food loss not only hurts farmers’ profits but also wastes the resources used to grow these imperfect foods.

In the end, this impacts us all through higher produce prices and environmental impacts.

No Bueno.

So, I thought I would give misfit vegetables a try, and when I saw a Misfits Market coupon, that was the clincher. What did I have to lose?

What You Need to Know Before You Order Misfits Market

The first thing you need to know is that this is a subscription service. You can choose to receive your box each week or bi-weekly.

There are 2 sizes of boxes. The Mischief Box serves two, and the Madness Box serves four. Since we are a family of 5, we chose the Madness Box. I worried about having too much produce that would go bad, so I chose delivery for every other week.

Misfits Market notifies you about your day to choose your ugly fruit and vegetables. Order day is five days before your order comes at 4 pm EST. It’s important to be online on time since some items get sold out quickly.

I did miss out on a couple of items I would have liked, but I certainly found other misfit produce to try easily.

The final step is to choose your add-ons, or not. These items may range from berries and condiments to beverages.

My Honest Misfits Market Review

So, here we go, what you’ve been waiting for. I was excited to receive my box and see how it looked. It’s pretty thick cardboard, so you would think everything would be safe.

Bum, bum, bum.

I opened the ugly food box only to see my add-on nachos bag pulverized. Ugh. Seeing this wasn’t a good start.

In fact, it looked like the contents got tossed around quite a bit. There were crushed boxes of tea, and some of the produce, like the mini cucumbers, was very bruised.

We could perhaps blame the delivery service for the damage, but I think Misfits Market has a responsibility to have packaging that will protect the misfit produce and add-ons.

My other con was that a couple of the fruit and veggies had rotten spots. Ugly produce is fine, but rotten produce is unacceptable. I had one pear, one green pepper, and an acorn squash with rotten spots. I was able to cut this area off and use the rest of the fruit, but I wouldn’t leave an item like this for long.

So, this brings up the question where does ugly end and rotten begin?

Overall, the rest of the items looked fine, and I was particularly happy with the Roma tomatoes. Surprising right? These were inside their own little box, within the Misfits Market Box, and made it through looking fine.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention the biggest problem of all. I had chosen navel oranges but received limes. I don’t use limes much, so this was disappointing. I’m not sure if it was a mistake or a substitution after they ran out.

My Experience With Misfits Market Customer Service

I contacted Misfits Market customer service online and explained the above issues in a short email. The stated expectation is to hear back from them within 48 hours.

I heard back within a few hours, so I was very impressed. They sent their apologies and reassured me that this is not the way their product should arrive. She also said the info would go up the management chain for evaluation.

I received a refund for the cost of the nachos and tea. In explanation, they stated that the refund is based on a percentage of the base box price and consider the use of Misfits Market coupon codes.

Should You Buy Ugly Produce?

Here’s the million-dollar question for my Misfits Market review, should you buy ugly produce?

Yes!

Overall, my experience was good. Misfits Market customer service saved the day, and I’m willing to stick around for another box or two to see if they are good. If they are, I think I will continue to use the service.

Keep an eye out for a future Misfits Market review update.

For the cons, I am worried that I may regret some of my choices as we get into a busy week, and I have to put effort into cooking items like squashes or other vegetables I’m not familiar with. Also, I can only hope that the next box shows up in better condition, and if it ever becomes too much, I could always reduce the box size or easily skip an order.

Now for the pros.

The reasons I think I will continue to buy ugly produce mainly include the environmental impact, it’s organic at a good price, it saves me a trip to the store, and it’s adding diversity to my diet. To save money, we have been primarily shopping at Costco, which is great, but it becomes monotonous. I can already tell that using Misfits Market will bring more variety of produce to our home and inspire me to cook more often.

And however little it may be I know it has a positive impact on the environment by supporting organic farmers and their food loss issues.

Misfit Market Review Update

Well, I received another box after this that was perfect. I was so happy with it.

Then the next order after that came with a leak in the ice pack and the box looked like it came through a world war. So, it seems a little hit or miss.

The important thing is to have an open mind, and to accept that the produce may be ugly as they say. But if there is ever an issue, customer service continues to make this right.

My final straw that pressed me to cancel my subscription all together was the substitutions. Misfit Market will substitute an item if what you requested was not available.

I would go out of my way to set alarms and request my items right away when they open ordering, so to not get it is surprising. It all ended over a butternut squash. Really.

I had already had one or two butternut squash for the season, by my choice, but when I received one without requesting it, that was it. If you know anything about squash, you may agree that it takes effort to cook and prep. I certainly don’t want one if I didn’t ask for it.

At least discount grocery stores will give you an option to decline a substitution. So, in the end I gave up on my ugly produce box. If they change their procedure or policy in the future I would probably be happy to try again.
