7 Sensational Fall Art Projects for Elementary School Aged Kids

Pumpkin spice season is upon us, and that means it’s time for fall art projects. Fall, or autumn, is my favorite season.

I love Halloween, but I also adore the changing leaves and pumpkin patches. It truly is the only thing I miss about living in the Midwest.

Children that don’t get to experience the splendor of the changing seasons still benefit from the discussions about what it is like. Take the opportunity to show your child a YouTube video about the seasons.

Theses elementary fall art projects are perfect for little artists to express the autumn season in a variety of ways. They are all on the easy side, so if you are trying to homeschool your children or simply need something to occupy them these are a perfect choice.

Keep reading for directions on how to do these fun fall art projects your kids will love.

1) Melted Crayon Fall Tree

This is a beautiful fall art project for elementary school kids to do. I collect broken crayons all year long just for crayon projects like this. Shabby crayons kids don’t want to use become a beautiful melted fall tree shape.

After getting your crayons “naked” as I call it (peel the paper off) use a common household grater to shred them into small pieces. I use an old grater to do this, not one I would use for food again.

You can usually find an old grater at a second-hand shop.

Keep each color of grated crayon separate to easily use them as an art medium to color with. Sprinkle the crayon pieces into the shape of a fall art tree.

Place your fall art into a 200ºF oven.

2) Pumpkin Apple Stamps

The list of the fall art project is incomplete without pumpkin art. Kids love it.

Did you ever use apple stamps as a child?

All you need to do is cut the apple in two pieces, in half vertically, and voila you have an apple stamp.

Use orange colored paint to make pumpkin shapes from the apple stamp.

This is a great way to make fall art or holiday greeting cards. Use white cardstock to make your pumpkins more prominent.

Use googly eyes that add fun to this project. Kids love their silly pumpkin faces.

To finish, cut small brown and green pipe cleaners to make a stem and vine for each.

3Candy Corn Footprints

Who says autumn art projects are all about pumpkins, leaves, and trees? Candy is a big part of the season.

This candy corn footprint art project is great for parents or Pre-Kindergarten teachers.

Paint their tiny feet in orange, yellow, and white stripes. It looks great on acid-free black cardstock or use painted canvas to make the print.

Place googly eyes and draw a smile with a black paint marker to finish it off.

These make great gifts for grandparents.

4) Leaf Pattern Watercolor Resist

Nothing says fall art projects like leaves, and that’s why we have included a leaf pattern watercolor resist project. Draw a leaf shape diagonally on watercolor paper or heavy paper that can withstand painting. I prefer a 90lb. or more.

Use a sharpie to trace the leaf and its vein. Now, use crayons to make patterns in each of the leaf’s sections.

Pro tip: Make a variety of patterns and press the crayon firmly or retrace it to make the wax lines heavy.

For more visual interest trace around the leaf’s outline with light crayons about 3 to 4 times. This suggests visual movement of falling or blowing leaves.

Finally, paint wit a generous amount of watercolor paint. This is a great time to discuss the color wheel so the colors they have near each other bleed together nicely.

5) Autumn Leaf Doodling

For leaf doodling and drawing, you need pressed autumn leaves, mod podge, and metallic sharpie markers. Let them dry and then coat the mod podge on the leaves to give them vibrant colors. Use the silver metallic sharpie marker to make the doodle.

This is a great opportunity to talk about ephemeral art.

6) Fall Birch Tree Painting

This is a gorgeous fall art project that every kid wants to hang on to their classroom proudly. You need tempera paint in fall colors, watercolor paper, colored pencils, masking tape, and cotton swabs.

Create the birch-style tree trunks by placing the masking tape on the watercolor paper going over the edge of the bottom and top.

Pro-tip: Lint the tape first by sticking it to your clothes first to avoid ripping your paper when peeling it off.

Now, dip the cotton swab into the paint and stipple (dab it straight up and down) to make the leaves of this fall forest painting.

Let it completely dry before peeling the masking tape off to expose the tree trunks.

Add the details on the trunks with a black colored pencil.

7) Puffy Paint Fall Art

If you are looking for a less time-consuming fall art project for your kid, this puffy paint art is for you. You will need a fall tree printable or outline and puffy paints (yellow, orange, red, and green). Older children may draw the tree on their own.

Fill the fall tree with puffy paint.

Pro tip: It is best to use the thick paper or cardstock for this project.

Final Thoughts on Fall Art Projects

I hope your children enjoy these fall art projects as much as mine do.

With any art project, there is an element of mess. I recommend letting your children use an old adult-size shirt to cover their outfit.

I purchase vinal table cloths at the end of a holiday to use as art drop cloths. They are perfect to protect your table or floor. Simply fold it up and forget it until next use.
