Are Essential Oil Diffuser Recipes Safe?
You may find conflicting information on the safety of essential oils. Essential oils can be considered VOCs, but you wouldn’t smell them if they weren’t.
Does that mean essential oils are bad?
Gerhard Buchbauer, a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Vienna in Austria says,
“Using the active compounds in essential oils in low concentrations and inhaling the vapors of these oils are normally safe for most people. Safety testing of essential oils have shown they have few negative side effects, when used as directed.”
With the rise in essential oil popularity, there has come a lot of misinformation, including wild claims to “cure” diseases. Without the proper knowledge, there is a higher risk of having allergic reactions.
For some of the best information about essential oils on the internet, I recommend checking out the Tisserand Institute. Robert Tisserand is one of the world’s leading experts in aromatherapy and follows the latest research on essential oils. He always promotes safety in combination with common sense.
“Risk needs to be balanced with benefits. If every substance that has caused at least one known allergic reaction was forbidden in personal care products, there would be no personal care products, and if every essential oil was used at a level that presented zero risk, there might be no benefit at all,” says Tisserand.
So, now, on the note of safety, it is considered safest to diffuse your holiday oil versus using it topically—especially if you have children.
5 Best Holiday Essential Oil Blends
I am so ready for the holiday season to start. I’ve already finished over half of my gift shopping. Now the focus will be on creating handmade gifts, baking, and decorating.
Anticipation is a big part of enjoying the season. After all, Christmas is only one day. But the family and friend gatherings, the food, and the fun that builds up to that one day are what fill us with life long memories.
Using your favorite scents helps lock in those special memories. And when you smell them again those feelings and recollections rise to the surface. Here are 5 of my favorite holiday essential oil blends that will bring joy to your season.
DIY Thieves Essential Oil Blend
Thieves is an essential oil blend by Young Living, but every major essential oil provider carries its version of this germ-fighting blend. I found a DIY version by a great natural herb vendor I’ve liked for a long time.
I took their version of the recipe and added in wild orange.
If by chance you don’t know what Thieves essential oil blend is, it has to do with a few grave robbers during the plague of the 15th century. They used this mysterious blend to protect themselves from contracting the disease while robbing the bodies of the ill and deceased. Legend says they exchanged their secret to lessen their sentences when caught.
This DIY Thieves Essential Oil Blend is supposed to help prevent illness, so not only does it smell great it helps fight the late fall to winter bugs the kids are bound to bring home. As soon as one kid gets the sniffles I diffuse a few drops in a central area to try to help the rest of us.
Blend these essential oils in a dark glass dram/vial with an orifice reducer for easy use.
